Looking for a greenhouse in Montgomery, Bucks or Delaware County? Need a horticulture day trip in Eastern Pennsylvania?

Adopting a plant? Picking up a seasonal floral? Need some potting soil?

In this post, we’re going to go over some of the best greenhouses and garden centers you can visit in the Philadelphia area and surrounding suburbs.

The Philadelphia area is well known for horticulture attractions due to the annual Philadelphia Flower Show, Longwood Gardens and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS). The PHS has been in existence since 1827.

These attractions, plus the proximity to the coast for temperature buffing, abundance of fresh water, and the hilly topography providing pockets of diverse growing zones, make the area the perfect for growing temperate plants, and shopping for them.

As a disclaimer, we want to note that in the area you will find many greenhouses and garden centers.

While below are the best we’ve found, keep in mind there are many other plant hotspots in the area that we may not have captured yet and are still to be discovered by us.

So with that in mind, if you are looking for a horticulture adventure, visiting one of these spots may be exactly what you need:

1 - Ott's Exotic Plants

Going to Ott’s is like visiting Longwood Gardens on a smaller scale, but the admission is free and you can buy the plants in the exhibit.

Coming here you will find a series of attached greenhouse rooms, one of which has a waterfall you can walk to the top of overlooking a koi pond.

A visit to Ott’s is a mental refresher and mood booster, as well as a great place to find cacti, succulents, tropicals, and seasonal florals for Easter, Poolside Season, and Autumn.

2 - Behmerwald Nursery

Calling all native and pollinator friendly plant lovers! You can get organic soils here, plus a variety of native perennials from herbaceous plants to flowering shrubs and trees.

3 - Chadds Ford Greenhouses

This is an awesome greenhouse and garden center if you are a cacti and succulent lover, love food plants, and decorative florals.

If you have stony areas and want to add more greenery to them, or you really like sempervivums, and other stone crops, they have quite the plant selection for rock gardens.

You can also find a small selection of local farm foods in a cooler by the register, like eggs and mushrooms.

4 - Primex Garden Center

Primex is a go-to for soil amendments. If you make your own planting soil blend, either for yourself or customers, they are the most likely shop to carry what you need in this area.

They also carry a nice selection of vegetable plants behind their tropical greenhouse, and a wide variety of English Roses in the Spring.

5 - Terrain

There are two locations of Terrain in the Philadelphia area, one in Glen Mills, PA and one in Devon, PA.

The Glen Mills Terrain is bigger, a stand alone shop, and the flagship location. The Devon Terrain is smaller, attached to an Anthropologie, and in a more urban setting.

Both are great to visit for greenhouse and outdoor space styling and inspiration ideas, as they carry the newest home decor items, and for plant species that are trending in horticulture.

If you are looking for a plant you saw in a magazine recently, you are likely to find it here. These greenhouses also feature a cafe, for refreshments as you shop.

6 - The Rhoads Garden

Located in scenic Bucks County, Rhoads carries a large variety of shrubs and trees, along with some of the prettiest mum cultivars.

Their indoor greenhouse is home to a few parrots, and they also have an incredible selection of terra cotta pots, in all shapes and sizes.

If you do a lot of large space landscaping, you will find a lot of bigger plants here; their tree collection is pretty impressive.

7 - Kospia Farms

While one of the farthest shops from Philadelphia proper, Kospia Farms is worth a mention.

Located in a scenic area near Bear Creek Mountain Resort, Kospia’s carries a variety of mulches, hardy florals, outdoor entertaining furniture, and they frequently host community or social events.

If you are a dog lover, you’ll be happy to know this property has a resident pup who often is available to greet customers.

Whether horticulture is your hobby or your career, these greenhouse spots have something for everyone.
