Making holiday wreaths is a fun and festive way to celebrate any occasion. It can also be a great outlet for your creativity.
If you’re looking for a unique Valentine’s Day decor item, consider a handmade wreath. You can make them to personally enjoy, give them as gifts, or even sell them.
In this post you’ll learn how to make an easy DIY Valentine’s Day wreath. You may also get Valentine’s Day wreath inspiration for ways to incorporate any crafting supplies you already have into your project, or for what types of items you’d like to include in your wreath.
You’ll need these supplies for a DIY Valentine’s Day Wreath:
- Metal wreath frame
- Two 2-inch pink ribbon rolls (3 yards/9 feet each or 6 yards/18 feet total)
- Artificial flowers and greenery
- Valentine’s Day paper hearts (called "table scatter")
- Jute twine
- Hot glue gun and 2-3 glue sticks
- Wire cutters
- Scissors
- Awl hole punch
- Tape measure
The wreath frame we used for this post is 14 inches, but wreath making is flexible and your frame can be a little smaller or a little bigger and still work; you just need to factor in a little less (or more) ribbon and hot glue.
Gather all of your supplies and place them out on a flat surface in front of you.
Next, separate out the wreath frame(s) you’ll be using, and place them on a flat surface. This post will walk you through making one wreath, but you can make more than that.
Begin warming your hot glue gun and glue stick.
Once your hot glue gun is warmed and ready to use, begin wrapping the ribbon around your wreath frame. To keep the ribbon in place, hot glue the top edge of the last ribbon wrap, to the bottom edge of your next ribbon wrap, as shown below.
Continue wrapping the ribbon around your wreath frame and hot gluing down the ribbon edges as you go, until you reach the end of the ribbon roll. Hide the end of your ribbon on the back of your wreath, gluing it down, then start wrapping the next ribbon roll.
Keep wrapping until your wreath is fully enclosed in ribbon.
When your wreath is fully wrapped, cut the ribbon with your scissors, and hot glue the ribbon end down on the back of the wreath, as shown below.
Next, flip your wreath over and begin plotting where you want your wreath’s florals and greenery.
Grab an assortment of pink and red flower heads, use the wire cutters to remove the excess stem, leaving only about a half inch on the back of the flower heads in place.
Using the Awl, make a hole in the ribbon. Place a dab of hot glue in the hole, and then stick the base tip of the flower head inside.
Continue the process of making a hole in the ribbon where you want your flower, dabbing the hole with hot glue and nestling the base of your flower head inside the hole, while holding the flower in place until it dries.
Keep adding flowers until you’re satisfied with your floral display.
Once you’re satisfied with your amount of florals, add a few sprigs of greenery for an accent using the same technique. Using the wire cutters, cut individual leaves off the stems, make a hole in the ribbon, add hot glue in the hole, stick your greenery in and hold it in place until it dries.
Your wreath will now look something like this:
Making Your Wreath’s Bow
Cut a piece of ribbon 18 inches. Overlap the ends and hot glue them together.
Cut another ribbon 22 inches long for the bow’s tail and align it to the back of the center of the bow where you glued the previous pieces together.
Now, get some jute twine and use it to tie the bow parts together, allowing the bow center to scrunch up for volume as you cinch it.
Next, cut a 3 inch piece of your same ribbon, wrap it around the center of the bow, and hot glue the ends together to mask the jute twine.
Hot glue the bow, at the center, onto the wreath.
Fold the bow tails down and hot glue these tails into place behind the bow. Finally, snip the bow tails at a diagonal at your desired length.

Make The Wreath Hanger
Choose where you want your top of the wreath to be. Using the Awl, poke a hole in the wreath's ribbon on the top wreath, and thread a loop of jute twine through the wreath. Tie the jute twine at the top and you have your wreath hanger.
Add Accent (if desired)
Finally, add any accent pieces to your wreath.
For our wreath, we chose glitter paper hearts and a single rose flower head to accent the floral display.
Using the awl, poke a hole where you want your rose flower head, insert hot glue into the hole, and push your rose’s flower head inside the hole. On either side of the rose, hot glue down the glitter paper hearts.
You’re done!
Your DIY Valentine’s Day Wreath is now finished. Take some time to admire your work and then hang it proudly in your desired location.
Clean up your wreath making supplies and put them in an easy to access location until your next wreath making occasion.
