Wondering how to get scratches out of a Le Creuset? In this post, you’ll learn how to easily remove scratches from a Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven with a gentle cleaning agent you may already have!

I recently acquired a new-to-me Le Creuset Enameled Dutch Oven. Anytime I receive new cookware, I like to give it a good cleaning, which helps me get to know the item and identify ways I can take the best possible care of it.

This Le Creuset had a few scratches I wanted to remove before using it and I also was concerned that the scratches would lead to the enamel chipping, making my new pot unusable.

So I called Le Creuset and to my surprise, a representative answered the phone.

The Le Creuset representative shared that the scratches were not harmful, and they could be easily lifted by a simple cleaner they recommend - Bar Keepers Friend.

I was thrilled to hear this information, since I already had Bar Keepers Friend on hand. Bar Keepers Friend can be found on Amazon and I keep mine in a labeled glass jar, since my canister did not have a proper seal once it was opened. Bar Keepers Friend is a dry, gritty polishing cleaner that you mix with a bit of water to form a paste.

To begin fixing the scratches in your pot, start with a clean Le Creuset ~

How To Clean a Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven

Ensure your pot is at room temperature before cleaning.

If there is food residue on the pot, fill with warm water and let soak for 15-20 minutes and then use gentle dish soap, like Ivory, and a wet sponge or soft cloth to remove any debris.

If there’s no hardened food residue, use gentle dish soap, like Ivory, and use a wet sponge or soft cloth to remove any debris.

Next, dry the pot and it’s time to polish the scratches.

Simply sprinkle a little bit of it on the bottom of your dutch oven’s interior, pour a bit of water on top and form a paste by mixing it together using a soft toothbrush or a soft cloth.

Once you have created your paste, use circular motions and a soft cloth to gently polish out the worn in scratches. Polish until you are satisfied with the scratch removal or until your arm is slightly tired, choosing the latter option only for more stubborn scratches.

Then, rinse the paste off the pot, dry off the pot and admire your work. If you still have a few scratches, repeat the steps above for a second round.

I cleaned the scratches out of the inside of my Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven using the steps above and am really pleased with the results.

After just two rounds of polishing, you can barely see any scratches anymore! Most are simply no longer there and of those that remain, they are much, much lighter than before.

Here are a side-by-side photos of the results:

This pot is looking good! The photos were taken in natural ambient lighting which did change as I cleaned this pot, but other than that, these photos show a Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven with a newer, shiner finish.

After I completed these two rounds of polishing, I cleaned this Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron with warm water, a soft cloth and a gentle dish soap.

My plan from here is to polish this enameled dutch with Bar Keepers Friend periodically to continue to lift those scratches, being careful not to polish off the enamel.

All in all, I’m pleased with the results using Bar Keepers Friend to remove the scratches in this Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven.
